The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor will give direct leadership to programs and services that include maintaining a safe aquatic environment at all times, educating the public regarding safe swimming habits and providing progressive swimming instruction in the aquatic system.


  • Ensuring safety procedures are followed as per the Lifesaving Society.

  • Documenting training and evaluating water quality testing.

  • Maintain the safety of patrons in and around the pool.    

  • Performs all lifeguard responsibilities including monitoring pool activities, applying first aid, and performing water rescues as necessary.

  • Ensures that swimmers are well supervised in the pool and on decks.

  • Keeps the management well informed of pool maintenance needs including cleaning, chemical adjustments, and repairs

  • Communicate and enforce pool regulations and rules in a personable and professional manner.

  • Communicate any potentially dangerous elements of the facility to the supervisor.

  • Deliver excellent customer service to all that utilize the facility and serve our diverse population.

  • Work as a team with other lifeguards during special events.

  • Record daily participation numbers and complete daily activity reports.

  • Tests the water record results, and report imbalances to supervisor.

  • Set up pool for various activities such as laps, classes, etc.

  • Maintain a clean pool (clean area, notify maintenance, etc.).

  • Handle all incidents in a manner appropriate to your training

  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to the mission and core values of the Westminster Pool.

  • Provides instructional swimming lessons to various age groups following established curriculum.

  • Plan, organize and implement core lesson plans/daily lesson plans, progress reports and evaluations.

  • Maintain accurate, up to date progress sheets and records for participants; keep Daily Log up to date and accurate.

  • Set up and take down recreational, program and other equipment as required at the same time checking that equipment is safe and in good repair (reporting immediately all malfunctions and removing the damaged equipment immediately from circulation).

  • Complete a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shift. Assist staff team in some cleaning duties related to pool and equipment.



  • Minimum age of 17

  • National Lifeguard Program Award.

  • Standard First Aid & CPR C.

  • YMCA and/or Red Cross / Swim Instructor certification.

  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers.

  • Excellent written communication skills.

  • Excellent command of English Language both written and oral.

  • Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work, including early mornings, days, evenings and weekends.

  • Mandated training is required before or shortly after commencement of work.
